Female Focus Group
Are you aged 18+, female identifying, and interested in feeding into the rehearsal and creative process of our show Occupational Hazard?
About the show:
Occupational Hazard follows the day of two air hostesses Becky and Linda, ACCAirways’ creme de la creme on a low budget airline where casual sexism and oppressive codes of conduct are normalised. Fusing choreography, comedy and clowning, Occupational Hazard, though at times tongue in cheek to entertain a plane full of passengers, is inspired by the #metoo effervescence of recent years.
The show delves deeper than the interplay between Becky and Linda, as they navigate consent and unsolicited touch as a female in the service industry, asking audience members to ride the waves of their individual emotional journeys. The underlying message of the show - female allyship, having a voice and using it is essential to calling out the systemic.
The theme of the show: casual sexism and sexual harassment, is a systemic social issue that almost everyone who is female identifying can associate with on some level. We recognise that it’s not a new issue, but if “6.5 million women in England and Wales have been raped or sexually assaulted since the age of 16” (1), More than 1 in 4 women have been raped or sexually assaulted as an adult” (2) and “How many women are raped or sexually assaulted every year? 798,000. That’s 1 in 30 women” (3) it’s clear that it’s an issue that affects far too many female identifying people, and that is still a contemporary concern with huge social impact.
To ensure that we're making a relevant and socially considered show, safeguarding audiences and creating space that encourages people to reflect, comment and advocate for change we want to involve female identifying people in the rehearsal and creative process.
What does this mean?
- we'd like to have discussions with you about sexual harassment, share lived experiences and understand your perspectives.
- tell you about the show, explain the story and the characters, and listen to your feedback
- invite you into the studio to see live rehearsals, seeing first hand how we work and what we can do to make the show better.
- invite you to watch the premiere of the tour at Seven Arts Leeds.
- brainstorm how we can create a safe space for audiences, before, during and after the show
